The first time you do almost anything it's difficult, and so it is with your first resume. Also the first attempt usually can be improved upon. Doing the first resume is a bind because it's so difficult to get over concisely in writing all that you have achieved.

You have to represent your educational background and qualifications plus your career experience whilst bringing out something of what you are going to be able to contribute in a new job.

The spur to do a resume for most people is when they get fed up and start looking for an alternative job. Sometimes this can be when facing unemployment and having to make a fresh start. Usually they see an advertisement and only then do they consider doing a resume.

This can mean that the resume is done under some form of time constraint. I remember well my first resume taking the whole of one weekend.

That was at a time when we did not have personal computers and word processing capability. So my first resume was hand written and a neighbour kindly typed it up for me. Things are so different now.

We can draught out a resume, edit it and change it at will to suit a particular situation or job application and develop and update the resume as we progress through our career. Vitally we can tailor the resume to the new job application, emphasizing particular points that should make the application particularly attractive to the potential new employer.

This means that when you have got that first resume in the can, with faults and all you can easily and speedily develop and improve your presentation so that you increase your chances of getting to interview. Getting you to interview is the sole purpose of the resume.

So I guess there are no excuses get your resume in the can and be ready. If you are daunted you can get more help here. You won't regret it and think of it like this, you will already be one step ahead of most of your competitors.

The Basics of the Cover Letter - Part 1

Resume Cover Letters

Resume Cover Letter Articles : The Basics of the Cover Letter - Part 1 by Dr. J.E. Burke

When you send people your resume, whether it's through regular mail, overnight mail, e-mail, or a fax, it's important to include a one-page cover letter. This letter must be carefully written so that it's just as convincing a document as your resume. The reason for this is that the only purpose of a cover letter is to provide information about yourself that will make people want to read your resume.

Gone are the days when a cover letter was a formality, where it sufficed to offer a few sentences explaining that you were enclosing your resume because you wanted to set up an interview. The cover letter has evolved to the point where, today, it's a key component of a job search, and in order to be effective it must include important facts about your background, most notably your accomplishments. Many people will judge your qualifications as much on this letter as they will on your resume. If properly prepared, your cover letter will play an active role in developing interviews. If poorly prepared, it can cost you interviews, with prospective employers and recruiters simply filing your letter and resume away. In other words, your cover letter can't make you, but it can easily break you.

You may need a cover letter for as many as five different situations: (1) contacting prospective employers on an unsolicited basis, (2) writing to a prospective employer on an unsolicited basis but with a referral from a mutual acquaintance, (3) approaching recruiting firms, (4) answering Internet postings and/or classified advertisements, and (5) contacting venture capital firms.

In addition to these letters, there's another type of correspondence for generating interviews: the networking letter. This is where you write to someone not for the purpose of setting up an interview but, instead, to elicit their help in arranging interviews. Depending on how well you know the person, you may or may not include a resume with your letter.

You can seek this networking assistance under four different conditions: (1) when you have an ongoing relationship with someone; (2) when you have met someone, let's say, only once or twice; (3) when you don't know the person you want to talk to but have been referred to him or her by a mutual acquaintance; and (4) when you know of someone who is very influential (this could be a businessperson, community or religious leader, politician, physician, attorney, etc.) who has a wide range of contacts and you need to approach the person cold, without an introduction.

Office Furniture Cover Letter Example

Resume Cover Letters

Resume Cover Letter Articles : Office Furniture Cover Letter Example by Ajeet Khurana

The job market is riddled with great competition, and so you need to set yourself apart early. But all that you have to make a great impression is a piece of paper and some information. How you present that information is going to determine if you get that awaited for interview. Try making use of some of these great tips to write impressive resume cover letters. For the purpose of this article, we will use a generic job of "Office Furniture Purchaser" to illustrate the main ideas.

* Don't use up your first paragraph with a boring introduction. Write an introduction that will make them sit up and take notice. Give them the reasons you are qualified right off the bat.

E.g.: Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to apply for your advertised position as office furniture. am keen to talk about the high points of my career from the past 15 years in the office furniture industry with you.

* Don't use old stand-bys like "Attached please find my resume..." Your prospective employer can SEE your resume; they don't need you to tell them it is there. Don't use such redundant sentences. If you need to refer to your resume in your cover letter, use statements like this:

E.g.: My CV will clearly illustrate I am a qualified and skilled office furniture purchaser with a proven track record in budget saving techniques.

There, you just told them that you have experience, and you know how to save them money, AND you have a resume.

* Eschew complications in your resume cover letter. Keep it simple. If you are educated, they will know that you can use big words in the interview.

E.g.: I would be honored to work with you, and establish my record breaking office furniture purchasing experience with your company.

* Don't forget to talk about what you expect from the job, and mention words used in the ad in your resume as things you can do. It may look blatant, but it influences the prospective employer to see you in a better light. For example, if the ad says, "seeking detail oriented and efficient time manager for Senior Office Furniture Buyer", you want to say...

E.g.: My skills include a flawless attention to detail, commitment to meeting deadlines, and multi-tasking experience as a Senior Officer in a National Furniture Division.

By following these simple suggestions, you will have a resume that will make a good impact. Good luck!
