The Invincible Cover Letter: 5 Secrets For Writing An Unstoppable Cover Letter by Aaron Krall

Something just didn't seem right. Weeks had passed since Craig had submitted his resume to his potential employer. This was the job he had always wanted, yet to his disappointment he had not received one call from the company. Craig couldn't figure it out! He had all of the qualifications, had spent weeks writing a killer resume, and still no response. He finally called to check on the status of his application and found to his distress that the position had already been filled.

Craig is one of many job seekers that suffers from "C.C.L.S.", or better known as: Crummy Cover Letter Syndrome. Many job seekers suffer from C.C.L.S. and don't even know it. Some of the common symptoms are: carelessness in creating or even not even including a cover letter, a boring and uninteresting cover letter, or sometimes long and wordy cover letters. To help you get started, here are 5 secrets that will make your next cover letter absolutely unstoppable. (If you would like a resource that goes into greater depth, I suggest "Top Ten Secrets of the World's Greatest Cover Letter". You can get it for free from http://greatestcoverletter.truforyou.com. )

Research the Company

One of the biggest mistakes job seekers make is not researching the company they want to work for. You see, companies have certain goals, aspirations and mission statements that you can find out even before you get hired. Go to the company website or call them to ask a few simple questions. After you do your research, include in your cover letter how you will help accomplish the companies goals, aspirations and dreams. Emphasize THEM and not YOU.

Grab Their Attention

You cover letter is, in essence, a sales letter that focuses on selling you to the company. And any good copywriter will tell you that a good sales letter should grab the readers attention. How can you do this? Well, here are a few examples: "I have researched [company name] and I believe I am a perfect match for [put the job title here]" or "I would love to be interviewed in person for the position of [job title]." Put the headline right after your salutation, centered, and in bold-faced type.

Nice, Short and Sweet

One way to turn of your reader is create a long....boring....wordy cover letter. Your cover letter should be short, precise, and get directly to the point. Your cover letter should be one page. No more, no Less. Don't try to fill up space with writing, let it "breathe". The more white space in between paragraphs the better. Start the first sentence of each paragraph of with bold- faced type. After you finish, print it out and look at it and make sure it's not cluttered. It should be easy on the eyes and invite them to read it.

"Ask and Ye Shall Receive"

Ask yourself one question: What is the purpose of your cover letter? You got it! To get you an interview. One of the most effective way to do that is to ASK for the job interview. Tell the reader that you are excited about meeting with them and to schedule an interview they can call you at 555-555-5555. By asking for an interview it puts the idea in the head of your reader to pick up the phone and call you. And you know what? It works like a charm, and if you only learn one thing after reading this article, this should be it.

Follow up, Follow up, Follow up!

After you submit your cover letter/resume and are lucky enough to get interviewed, you must submit a post-interview cover letter. I will repeat that just in case you didn't get it. If you want to DOUBLE your chances of getting the job, you must submit a post-interview cover letter. This letter should accomplish 3 major things: thank them for the interview, say your available, and that your still interested in the position. Everyone loves to get a thank you and know they're appreciated and your interviewer is no different. When should you send it? ASAP. Oh, and make sure you include your contact information again.
A couple months later Craig applied for another job, one he liked even more. He sent in his resume with a killer cover letter. 3 days later Craig got a call for an interview. He felt that the interview went well, and felt like he might get the job. But he didn't stop there. The very next day he sent out a post-interview cover letter that thanked the interviewer and informed him that he was very interested in the position and included his contact information. 2 days after that Craig got a call and heard those two fantastic words: Your hired! If you follow these 5 key ingredients, you too can create an invincible and unstoppable cover letter.
