Resume Cover Letters

A cover letter is a business letter and begins with the name and address of the applicant followed by the name and address of the employer. So, on a piece of scratch paper write down all of this information accurately. If you don't know the name of the Human Resources representative or other professional who will be reviewing your resume, do some research. Try to discover their name. If you absolutely cannot find the name of the hiring director, then the address will include "Hiring Manager for [Job Position]".

For this example, the applicant's name is Jane Smith. Address: 123 Street Road, City, State 98765. Phone number: 555 - 345-9876. E-mail address: jane.smith@email.com. The hiring manager is John Doe. Company: XYZ Business. Address: 987 Centre Ave, City, State 98765.

Next, write down the title of the job, where you found the job advertisement, and why you are interested in that particular job. Be specific when answering this question.

After you've completed those notes, write down a list of some of your skills and/or goals that would be beneficial to the company. Write down why and how they can be beneficial to the company. You may also want to write down where you learned and practiced those skills.

For this example, Jane Smith's skills are increasing productivity, increasing revenue, and business management. She wants to use these skills to show that she can help the company restructure their working teams in order to increase production of their product and increase revenue.

The final part of the cover letter is the closing paragraph, which reiterates your interest in the job and mentions your desire for an interview. You can also include a statement explaining to the employer that you will follow-up with them. Include this only if you actually plan on calling and following up with the hiring manager. On your piece of scratch paper, write down these intentions so you don't forget to include them in your actual cover letter.

After you've written down all of this information, you'll want to assemble it into a great cover letter. For examples using the information above, please see the following downloadable Word document:
