How to Write Cover Letter For a Fresh Graduate

Resume Cover Letters

You are just from graduated college and are now looking for a job, Congratulations! You know that the process of getting a job is different when looking for a career compared to the past jobs you have had while in high school or college, but how? One large difference is you will be expected to provide a cover letter for each job you apply to. The cover letter is your opportunity to let the company know you have done your research about them, and can tell them exactly why you will be the best fit for their position.

But what is the best way to write a cover letter? Below is a good form to use when beginning your cover letter.
It is important to remember that a cover letter is a business letter and needs to be formatted so. That means the beginning should be something like this:

Graduate Name
Graduate Street Address
Graduate City, State and Zip Code
The Date

Name of Person Addressing to
Their Title
Their Company Name
Their Street Address
Their City, State and Zip Code

Dear Name of Person Addressing to:

You may be confused as to what to do if you do not know who to address the letter to. You should make all efforts to find out the name of the person hiring for the position you want, or the human resources manager's name, but if you cannot, you can simply address it you Human Resources Manager.

The next paragraph should thank them in advance for their time and attention and advise them what position it is that you are interested in and that you think you will be a good candidate for that position.

The next paragraph will need to list your skills and background that will be relevant to the position you are trying to obtain. Listing all skills and experience that applies, especially that which makes you different or special compared to other applicants, should take several sentences and will be the large part of the body of your letter.

Next you will describe what you know about the company, position, it's structure and company culture and how you think you will easily fit in well with those things. If the company has a particular focus or something in its business model or vision statement that you agree with, this is a great opportunity to point this out.

You then want to let them know how to contact you for an interview and what times are best to contact you to schedule it. You should also advise them when you will be available for the interview. Many people also include their email address here as well.

You will want to end the letter formally as well, like below:

Sincerely,

Signature

Graduate Name

Enclosures: resume

Each cover letter you write will be different, and if you spend the time to tailor it to the job you are applying for as much as possible, focus on good grammar and spelling, and do a great job of showing how you will be the best candidate, for sure you will have a better chance to get an interview.

Online Resume Cover Letter - Two Tips How to Use Them

Resume Cover Letters

Online resume cover letters are a source of information that sometimes gets mixed reviews. Some say they're great others say they're useless. Of course this is going to be tied in to the results each individual experienced using the cover letter. To not make the argument any longer than it already has been, I'm just going to focus on my experience and the two tips I picked up that really helped me see results.

I job hunt to get a job. Plain and simple! I don't apply hoping they have the perfectposition for me with the perfect salary. Why do I say this? One simple reason, I want a job in a place that gives me two things, opportunity to move up and recognition for my efforts. I can prove the value I bring to the table that's not a problem. The problem I was having was that I really wasn't making it to the table. My online resume cover letter wasn't getting me to the interview.

I was really at a point where I was thinking it was just the job market. "There's no room for all of us." That's really what I was telling myself. Thought I knew better. I looked over my resume and cover letter and decided that I needed to make a change to the way the reader viewed me. I had been using an online resume cover letter that I had plucked from the black hole of the internet. I couldn't even remember where I got it from. It really sounded good, to me. It covered the basics. It asked for an opportunity to demonstrate my abilities. Told them a little about my skills and gave them the easiest way to contact me. That's about all I figured it needed.

I realized the online resume cover letter was too generic and it needed to be more personal to me. I looked for more information online but with my new set of eyes, so to speak, I was realizing that most if not all the information was the same. It just seemed to plain and generic with nothing much to offer and giving little to no reason to call, exactly what had been happening to me. So I searched online but now for a better source of information to make my cover letter stand out. It was either that or I was going to rewrite the letters I was finding online.

Another trick I learned was to never say you see yourself doing anything else than what you're applying for. Companies don't like to hire and train only to have them go follow their dreams of American Idol or what ever. I made it clear on my cover letter that I really wanted to be stable, settle into a place and move up.
Those two tips worked for me. Making a custom cover letter, instead of an online resume cover letter and being clear about my intentions to be part of the company for a long time helped me secure the job I have. What my plans are in the future should only be my business. There's no reason to unsettle an employer about my future plans. They're in the future and as long as my employer is getting the best from me, they should be fine.

A Cover Letter is a Sales Presentation of You

Resume Cover Letters

A cover letter's only objective is to compel the reader into contacting you. In some ways, it is also to introduce yourself and set the stage for the resume. Yet, if you can write a cover letter that compels the hiring manager to call you, then the resume simply becomes what it is meant to be; a documented list of past experiences and accumulated skills.

Let us look at this from a sales perspective. A sales presentation is essentially composed of four parts:
- Approach
- Presentation
- Proof
- Close

The cover letter is the presentation and the close. The resume becomes the proof that supports your presentation as laid out in the cover letter. The approach is simply what you do to get the hiring manager to read your offer.

If the presentation is solid, the proof is something buyer needs to reinforce his belief that he made a good buy. So, in that light, the resume becomes the afterthought in a sense. If you have written a cover letter that effectively convinces the hiring manager to call you, then the resume simply reaffirms that, "yes, I am doing the right thing in calling this person, why; look at how sterling the resume is!"

On the other hand, if the cover letter fails to impress or convince; all the hard work of putting together the resume may be for nothing. A person must already have a "buying" predisposition for the proof to work, otherwise all the testimonials and proofs will probably not be enough.

Most people are familiar with the features and benefits of a product and what the differences are. In short, features are what make a product unique and the benefits are "what's in it for me." Yet in making the presentation, it is not enough to simply state mostly the benefits or mostly the features.

A good sales presentation makes the connection between a feature that the buyer most cares for and the benefit to the buyer. It is the connection that you draw that sets the stage for the close. It is not enough to say, "I am proficient in sales management, having directed 6 sales representatives in achieving 106% of sales quota for 2000." That is the feature, that is nice; but so what.

It is not enough to say, "I can generate an increase in sales for your company by building a team of aggressive sales representatives." That is nice, that is a benefit to hiring you I suppose, but what makes me believe that? And do I have to go back to the previous statement and make my own connection?

The feature and benefit must flow to something like, "I can bring increased sales and revenue to your company; as I did for Wily E. Acme Inc., where I achieved 106% of sales quota for 2000," or words to that effect. You state the benefit first, and then, bridge to the feature. In this case, you are the product and so the cover letter is your sales pitch of you.

As you write your presentation, as much as making the connection for the hiring manager is critical, even more critical is making the right connection between the feature she is looking for and the benefits she needs. And the answer to that riddle is in the job description and your research of the company. You should not send form letters, willy-nilly, to every job you are interested in.

Select the position and the company that is a match for you, and then, you must dissect the job description. Make a bullet point list of what they are looking for. Then make a list of your skills and qualifications. And as you did in grade school, draw a line between what they are looking for and what you have to offer.
Research the company and industry and attempt to pinpoint which of the bullet pointed items seem to be the most important.

Mirror the words and descriptions that you picked out of the job posting and description. Nearly every job posting is pretty exact in what they are looking for. So,give them what they want in the words they wrote it in. If you use a template to get the flow of ideas down first, fine; then tweak the letter to mirror what the company is looking for.

And of course, you must close the letter by asking for a decision, "I suggest getting together immediately to discuss the possibilities between us, you may call me at (000) 000-1234."

In concept, I suggest you write the cover letter as though it was a sales presentation. As you write the letter, write it in terms of what the buyer is looking for and in the words the company uses. You letter will be far more compelling.

Tips On Writing A Cover Letter

Resume Cover Letters

You should send a cover letter to a prospective employer regardless of whether you are applying for an advertised job or you are sending in a forced application. Your cover letter should provide the following data: background information about you, your skill set, experience and your achievements. You should use the letter to request for an interview or for a meeting if the job has not been advertised.

You should always try to make your cover letter as personalized as possible. Do not make the mistake of addressing the letter to "Whom It May Concern". Mention the designation of the person to whom you are sending out the letter. If you know the person's name, make it a point to mention it above the designation. Avoid sending generic cover letters. Take the time to tailor your letter according to the company you are sending it out to as well as the particular job you are applying for. Although this may sound tedious it is well worth the time and effort. If you are not sure of how to address the cover letter, call the company and find out. Spend some time researching the company so that you can customize your letter to suit the company culture and profile. You need to let your prospective employer know that you are clued in to the job requirements and can execute the job.

You need to prove that you are a better fit than other candidates. This is why you need to highlight the specific skills and experience that you have that match the application criteria. Your enthusiasm and positive attitude towards the job need to come across through your letter.

The language of your cover letter should be simple and direct. Keep your writing focused and tight. The letter should be a maximum of one page in length. The person going through your cover letter would just have enough time to scan it and look for key points.

Therefore, structure your cover letter so that it is easy to pick out the important points. Keep the format of the letter such that it is easily legible. Make sure your letter looks professional. Avoid using fancy fonts - stick to standard fonts.

The first point to keep in mind while writing a cover letter, is that you are not writing it to apply for a job. A cover letter is a brief letter that accompanies your resume, portfolio or any job application documents.

Writing the Ideal Cover Letter to Capture Attention

Resume Cover Letters

Firstly is the introduction Keep it brief and polite and state your reason for the letter and how you learned about the job.

By explaining how you found out about the position, the recruiter gets a feel for your intention, and is able to see which method of advertising was utilized. This is a great opportunity to firstly specify the job you are interested in, and secondly, if you were encouraged to apply or have been referred by someone of good standing from the firm then you can add this information.

An example of a first paragraph could be: I would like to apply for the role of [add the position] within [add the department or company] as listed above. This position caught my interest whilst I was searching on seek.com.

or

"I would like to apply for the role of [add the position] within [add the department or company] as listed above. I became aware of this position when a family friend (John Doe - Personal Assistant to CEO) encouraged me to apply and provided a recommendation."

What Interests You? Next paragraph should be 1-2 sentences explaining what interests you about the position in particular. This is a good opportunity to show enthusiasm, motivation and of course explain what it is about the job, hours, location, company or field of work that caused you to notice this vacancy? For example:

"This position is of specific interest to me because I have developed a passion for customer interaction and providing customer service. You could say I am a people person and enjoy the opportunity to make a lasting impression."

Your Skills Next paragraph is of utmost importance to explain how your skills or qualifications meet their position requirements. Read over the job description to review the skills they are looking for, and note the skills you have that are the same and if anything your skills will enable the company to achieve its goals. An example of this paragraph would be:

"In short my last role that has major relevance was adult educator at a high school for 3 years where I taught during evenings for adult life skills much like the description of this position. My diverse background includes vocational teaching and communication oriented positions that are oriented towards personal support for people as that is an area I am very much passionate about. "

Intention to follow up stated Final paragraph is for you to state the next steps you will take to follow up. This is the edge that may put your resume at the top of the potential candidates. A sentence like

"Thank you for taking the time to consider my suitability to this position. I would like to get in touch over the next five days confirm if you require any additional information regarding my experience. "

The trick here is to actually follow up in five days with email or a call and ask if they require any further information at this point such as a list of references or a writing sample etc. This really just gives you the opportunity to build repour, get noticed and make a lasting impression. This contact shows the company that you have integrity in doing what you said you would do.

So good luck with your cover letter, and I would love to hear back from you once you have applied this format to your job applications.

Your cover letter is your "first step in the door" when it come to getting your resume reviewed by employers. Simple Cover Letter Examples? Secrets To Writing Winning Cover Letters For Cv's And Resumes

Resume Cover Letters

Follow these great tips on composing a winning cover letter to accompany your resume:

Believe it or not most mistakes in the covering letter are made in the address line. If mistakes are made in the address line, this will ruin your chances of even getting an interview.

Take careful note of the following three most common mistakes made in addressing your cover letter. Triple check your cover letter address line to ensure you get your foot in the door for the interview.

1) Not addressing the letter to a person. It only takes a couple of minutes to get the correct information. Call the organization and find out who is the hiring or recruiting person for the job, then address the letter directly to them.

If for some reason you cannot find out who the correct person is, do not assume that it is a good idea to start your letter with a generic greeting. Rather leave out the greeting altogether and simply begin your

2) Not spelling the name of the organization correctly.

A very common mistake, yet so easy to avoid. When your potential employer receives your letter, with the incorrect spelling of the company name, rest assured you won't be interviewed.

3) Not giving your reason for contacting the company.

When making contract with the company be specific -- give the title of the job you are applying for and how your qualifications make you the ideal candidate for the position. Keep the tone of this sentence positive and energetic to cause the employer to want to go through your resume in detail

We've all heard the sayings about how important 'first impressions' are. Your cover letter is exactly that...the first impression your potential employer has of who you are. So, don't make the mistake of messing up the first line --'the address line' -- of your chance at creating a good impression and getting the the job you want.

Cover Letter Writing Guide - Where to Start and What to Say

Resume Cover Letters

Your cover letter should be written in the typical business letter format and should address three general issues. The issues you will touch on are why you are writing via the first paragraph, what you have to offer via the second paragraph, and finally how you will follow up via the third and closing paragraph. These are broken down as follows:

*Why you are writing: In this first paragraph you need to convey to the reader why you are writing this cover letter and do it in such a way that you grab their attention. There are three different ways to go about writing this paragraph and they are:

1. Response to a posting: If you are responding to a posting that the company made be sure to indicate this in the first paragraph. You will also want to convey to them how you feel that you will be the perfect match for their position. 2. Prospecting Letter: This is an unsolicited response so you have to be even clearer as to why you are writing. Be sure to state your specific job objective in this section. 3. Networking letter: This type of cover letter will be written if you plan on approaching people for a job opportunity, so be sure your objective is clearly stated.

While it may be tempting to write a blanket cover letter and use it for all of the resumes you pass out, this is a big mistake. Be sure that the cover letter is tailored to a specific type of job and situation in which you are trying to get that job.

* What you have to offer: In the second paragraph of the cover letter you will want to convey to the potential employer exactly what it is you have to offer them. Key in on your accomplishments and abilities to solve potential problems and also be sure to show how your past work skills and education are transferable to the job in which you are applying. * How you will follow up: Finish off the letter by telling the potential employer once more how enthusiastic you are about the job. You can either give them an e-mail address and phone number to reach you with or you can go bold and simply declare that you will call them at a specific time and date to set up an interview at a mutually convenient time. If you do that however, be sure you call when you say you will.

You can also put on the cover letter that references are available upon request, just be sure that you have your reference list ready if it is asked for. While the cover letter isn't all that long, it needs to be written in a strong manner in order to get the potential employer to first look at your resume and then call you for an interview.

When you turn in your resume to a potential employer the first thing that they will see is your cover letter. Because your cover letter will be the first words read by the person deciding the fate of your dream job, you have to make sure that it sounds just as good as your resume. But where do you start and what do you say?

Avoiding the Common Cover Letter Mistakes

Resume Cover Letters

A Cover Letter Should Never Be Generic

Too many people take the lazy way out and write the same cover letter for every company they send their application to. This will be obvious to anyone reading the letter and instead of giving you attention; they will figure that they have no time to spend on you since you had no time to spend specifically on them. Instead, do the research to figure out who is going to be reading your resume and write a cover letter directly to them. This indicates that you have the work ethic to do your research and know the facts before you take action, which will give a positive image.

Also take the time to make your cover letter uniquely different from your resume. Don't simply restate all of your accomplishments and skills. Instead, apply your knowledge of the position that you are applying for and demonstrate how your skills will be beneficial in that position. This could help you make a lasting impression to the point where the interviewer will want to call you in to get to know you a little better. A unique and informative cover letter will take you a long way along the path toward getting the job.

Be Businesslike, Yet Personal

Your cover letter is a perfect opportunity to show some of your personality, which is something that a flat out resume will lack. When you craft your cover letter in a way that will show the knowledge you have and the way that you will apply it, you can showcase your creativity and work ethic, two major qualities which every company is looking for in their employees. Make sure that you let a little bit of yourself come through in your cover letter, as this will give you an opportunity to make an impression that so many other applicants will not.

This does not mean, though, that you should ignore business customs and make a cover letter entirely personal. You want to keep the subject business related and show that you are professional as well. Do not make the cover letter too long and do not ignore standard customs of respect. You will want to show that you are going to be a good addition to the company and that you will fit in as part of the team without causing disruption. Keeping your cover letter professional, while still revealing a bit of your personality will help you make a strong impression, which will have a tremendous impact on the outcome of the interview.

Many people have attributed the success of landing a job to the fact that they wrote and delivered a strong cover letter. This cover letter could be the very first thing that a hiring company reads and therefore, could end up serving as the first impression you make. When you have an outstanding cover letter, your chances of being called back for an interview increase tremendously. It makes sense then that you should make every effort to ensure that your cover letter is superb. Avoiding the most common cover letter mistakes can put you immediately on a path to success.

Telecommuting Cover Letter Tips

Resume Cover Letters

You have your resume completed and you want to get a cover letter developed to send along with it. Should you use the same one you used for past onsite jobs? The answer would be no.

Onsite jobs are different than telecommuting jobs. Not only do you not commute to work for a telecommuting position, but employers are also looking for slightly different things from a person who will work from home.

Since cover letters help sell you to the employer, then the cover letter you send with your telecommuting resume should be much different than the ones you have used in the past for onsite jobs. You need to sell them on those things that hiring managers are looking for in a telecommuting applicant.

So, what do they look for?

Home office setup- What does your home office contain? Do you have what the job position requires you to have? Most employers want to know that you have everything you need or at least the major components, such as computer, high-speed internet etc.

Why are you the right person for the job?- Tell them what makes you be the person that should be hired for the job. Use statements like, "I have 6 years experience as a web designer, so I know..." Avoid telling them anything that they don't want to hear- Most people want to work from home to be with their kids or because they're tired of commuting. You're not alone there, but employers don't want to know that. You will just appear desperate for a job and could make them lose their interest in you fast; even if you have 20 years experience doing the job.

Give them what they do want- Most job ads will list requirements that the prospective employee should have before they'll consider hiring you. Tell them that you have those requirements, listing them in your cover letter. The resumes that get more attention are the ones that have what they're looking for. The cover letter will get them to want to check out your resume. The ones that don't may end up getting deleted.

Research the company, if possible- You may find that the company's motto relates to an achievement you have. For example, let's say a company has a motto about caring for their customers. If you have an achievement award for best customer service excellence, then the hiring manager should know that. Show them that you fit their mold. It also shows them that you did your homework.

Always keep in mind that any job that will done from home will most likely be a position that hundreds, if not thousands, will also be applying for. You will need to stand out from that crowd to get noticed.

Take your time creating your telecommuting cover letter. Don't be afraid to sell yourself to grab the employer's attention. Without an effective cover letter, your resume probably will sit on a computer's hard drive unread or get deleted.

Free Cover Letter Example and Sample

Resume Cover Letters

A cover letter is a business letter and begins with the name and address of the applicant followed by the name and address of the employer. So, on a piece of scratch paper write down all of this information accurately. If you don't know the name of the Human Resources representative or other professional who will be reviewing your resume, do some research. Try to discover their name. If you absolutely cannot find the name of the hiring director, then the address will include "Hiring Manager for [Job Position]".

For this example, the applicant's name is Jane Smith. Address: 123 Street Road, City, State 98765. Phone number: 555 - 345-9876. E-mail address: jane.smith@email.com. The hiring manager is John Doe. Company: XYZ Business. Address: 987 Centre Ave, City, State 98765.

Next, write down the title of the job, where you found the job advertisement, and why you are interested in that particular job. Be specific when answering this question.

After you've completed those notes, write down a list of some of your skills and/or goals that would be beneficial to the company. Write down why and how they can be beneficial to the company. You may also want to write down where you learned and practiced those skills.

For this example, Jane Smith's skills are increasing productivity, increasing revenue, and business management. She wants to use these skills to show that she can help the company restructure their working teams in order to increase production of their product and increase revenue.

The final part of the cover letter is the closing paragraph, which reiterates your interest in the job and mentions your desire for an interview. You can also include a statement explaining to the employer that you will follow-up with them. Include this only if you actually plan on calling and following up with the hiring manager. On your piece of scratch paper, write down these intentions so you don't forget to include them in your actual cover letter.

After you've written down all of this information, you'll want to assemble it into a great cover letter. For examples using the information above, please see the following downloadable Word document:

In this post, we are going to go over the process of writing a cover letter. At the end you will find sample cover letters written in the appropriate format.
